color: rgb(255, 255, 0);">The Strawberry Fools at the Hythe Centre Staines – You talk of me with acid rain

..a Review by Nigel The Badgeman

Sadly I was only able to make this show and not the one the night before at which apparently all sort of microphone drooping and other shenanigans happened.

A band on the wagon, sworn to no Bacardi until it was all over, I rather suspect there may have been just a little ad libbing on that front, as a few cans of liquid refreshment were cast to the floor inside a bin upon arrival.

Onto the night, or last night as it is now, and a goodly gathering of friends, musicians and spiders witnessed some fine playing which kept us entertained all night long.

Claridge fronted the band (most of the time) hardly dressed in his vibrant grass snake green but resplendent in what could be termed his royal gardening attire, forestry green and invisible within a forest, or stalking for a dear. He certainly cut a dash with his bongos between his legs.

To the left, Rand “he” “Pete the Fool” tinkled away on the old ivories like he was a Wakeman in waiting,. If the truth is known, it probably wasn’t ivory, more like plastic or bakelite, although as no chemical testing was allowed on the night, it may have been either. Pete was wearing the designer t-shirt emblazoned with the Fools logo (available from Foolish enterprises at £8 ) His mug also appeared a few times on the interactive screen used as a backdrop as sponsor of tonight’s event. Next time a BT directory, or is it yellow pages drops through your door, be thankful, you helped the show, remember the Fools and look up their number.

In the midst sat the “Dick”, being a Saturday night I imagine there were many plaudits coming the way of a Dick way right across the country. Vocalist , guitarist and yes…historian par excellence about all things like the development of the western world, but majoring on lecturing everyone on the history of tonight’s songs and their place in the history of Strawbs albums. “Let the worrying start”, if any of it filters out

Sitting to the left of centre, but to me on the right where the Prince is normally seen, was the King of the lead guitar Ralph the “Tongo” Fool. Studious interpretations and little tinkles were very much in evidence through the sets, enhanced by the use of ebow and slide in very special places. Very special places indeed and the excellent inserted additions made those special places, special.

Finally, there was Les the Fool Cotton, bassist and interpreter of gadgets. How I loved the bits where the bass shone through and thumped me square and fairly in the ear. But that is not the full story, a quick change – of position ! saw Les swap places with the green cross dresser taking the lead for Starshine…OK there may have been no Angel wine, but the voice rang out sweetly.

Starshine from Les Cotton on Vimeo.

A goodly gathering, oh I have said that once, spread from far and wide across the globe and UK, indeed fans had even travelled from Holland for this special weekend, although Roy Hill trumped that as he had a fan that had flown… OK, really got them them bussed in from Germany which is a little further, just to show who is le boss.

While seasons change… yes well

Why seasons change we were treated to two exhibitions of this line at the very start as the band found their groove and then flowed seamlessly from classic to classic, except of course for the little history lessons in between.

Some great interpretations of songs and the harmonies were absolutely spot on. When you were a child, you probably didn’t know the Fools, but if not, tonight by this second number you certainly did. This is no foolish operation, even if in name, certainly not in their playing.

It was good to hear so many tunes that don’t usually get a live airing and as I never copied down a set list, I‘ll leave that to another compiler or the historian in residence.

Whilst a Strawberry fool or two may have been the main attraction tonight, we should not forget the support of Wychwood or the undoubted talents of Mr Roy Hill who had the audience, both new and old switching between laughter and intensity of songs… in the split of second….in much less time than it takes to do the atom. What a coop.. Baa !

I picked up a copy of the Fools first CD release – Antiques and Cheerios. When I said “picked up” , I would have done, but the security around the merchandise was so tight, ever seen the size of their bouncers ?? never got my fingers any where near it. …nor me … so I went along and bought one.

Got to thank the Fools for the drinks and e mail check on the cover and also the free advertising, but if you think your e –mails are indecipherable you should see the ones Mr. Hill sometimes gets after my Friday night on the cider.

Ever the glutton for punishment I thought I would listen on the way home. As if an evening the company of Fools wasn’t enough, I was all set up for that little extra. A very fine album it is too, with one or two or three or four originals. The only complaint I have is that it is so long, by the time I turned into my drive it was still playing.

So the answer would be to either slow down a bit or throw it out of the window before I get back. Certainly not the latter, it’s available,…… again from Foolish enterprises (£7 – plus or minus postage, I have no idea on that ) and well worth my recommended investment. I've come up with the method below.

Huge improvement in Filesize, 50mb instead of 500mb for a Project, with no perceivable quality drop...amazing.

====================================================

0. EXPORTING A PROJECT

File > Consolidate/Export Tracks:

Ensure ENTIRE PROJECT is checked top left, choose CONSOLIDATE TO, and in the dropdown box, OGG VORBIS,

Leave at defaults (192khz etc).

In Output consolidated files to directory, click the Browse button, and choose or make a new Directory, maybe c:\audio\songname ... this will convert all individual tracks to OGG format, and also Save a reaper.rpp file, plus some peak files (not strictly needed, but OK to include).

Click the Process button.

2. Whilst they are ALL highlighted, Right-click once anywhere on the highlight, and choose SEND TO then COMPRESSED (zipped) FOLDER ... you will see the files being added to a ZIP file named like your files.

Go to -

www.sendspace.com

Click BROWSE there, find the ZIP file, click on it .. it appears in the box ready for Upload ... enter Recipients Email, tick box bottom left to agree terms, and click UPLOAD .... once done, a link is sent to the Recipient ready for Download, and also appears onscreen.

3. DOWNLOADING & IMPORTING A PROJECT

When Recipient has the File, he UnZips the contents to a Folder in his working Audio directory, then a simple left doubleclick on the SONGNAME.RPP file will load all tracks locally into his Reaper prog, maintaining all PAN / VOLUME etc settings, as seperate tracks.

All of the above also applies if you use the excellent FLAC format...just substitute FLAC in the dropdown menu instead of OGG ....filesize is roughly double that of OGG, but totally lossless.

================================================================

Hope this all makes sense ! It goes back a long way, mid 90's...I am a licensed Radio Amateur, and way before the Internet, used to have a Packet Radio system. This was a very crude version of data transmission, where text, images, programs etc could be sent (VERY slowly!) via the radio airwaves wirelessly around the world. It used a system of "Nodes" each of which relayed to another, and another, forming a remote Network. Each Node needed an Alias. As I lived near ROChdale at the time, and i'm called LES, I put the two together, and ROCLES emerged :)

I've stuck with it as it sounds a bit musical (Roc/Rock..), so fits well with Home Recording....

So there you have it.......

<img width='1' height='1' I felt a detailed explanation of my recording process was needed, so here goes....

That title subject, "A Journey into Stereophonic Sound", is a line from an old Vinyl Stereo test record that my Uncle Jack played me as a kid. I have now found the actual recording, you can hear it in this player -

I was fascinated...firstly, because he had a superb STEREO record player way before my folks could afford one, and secondly because of the sheer wonder of the sound....a Steam Train thundering across the room, fantastic! So, from that moment on, I was hooked......Jack also had a superb Triumph Spitfire two-seater open top Sports car that he'd just rebuilt, and took me for a blast in that...he has a lot to answer for :)

Fast forward to around 1969, and after much pestering, my Dad came home with...a guitar !! By today's standards, it was horrendous...to start with, it was left handed, but had been restrung as right, so all the nut slots were wrong. The action was stunningly bad, but a great way to improve strength in your fingers :) . I enrolled in Guitar classes at school...attended the first lesson, and they tried to make me read music...in true Mancunian style, "stuff this", I thought...and went home to teach myself. The guitar actually came with the Legendary "Play In A Day" book by Bert Weedon, so I set about playing the somewhat dreadful songs contained in it until I could change chords quite fast.....and then after many months learning, that "Eureka" moment when you realise "hey, I can play!!"

Fast forward again to April 1974, and a surprise birthday treat from my cousin Pete....two tickets to see The Strawbs at Manchester Opera House. What a revelation...from the opening crashing notes of "New World", with swirling smoke and cascading red and blue stage lights, through to the finale and that juggernaut of a riff, "The River / Down By The Sea" played by Dave Lambert (with cigarette smouldering away, stuck in his guitar strings above the nut...to this then-16 year old, HOW cool ??!!) , I was mesmerized, and inspired..... I dashed home and sat up into the early hours until I could play that riff note perfect...the real start of my guitar adventure.... thanks, Dave.

I shortly afterwards joined a local band in Manchester with my mate Paul "Nachtsmeer", who also played me the then brand new "Hero and Heroine" Strawbs album.....another defining moment ! Its still my benchmark in production values, a fantastic sounding album from start to finish, and the "atmosphere" of produced sound that I aspire to now.

1990's.... I was very fortunate to be asked to help a local band with some guitar overdubs in a full 24 Track studio in Manchester in 1992. I learned a lot from that, and ended up spending the next two years playing Live shows with them, an interesting experience and learning curve in itself. I put my own first "Studio" together around 1995, consisting of a simple Fostex X15 4 track cassette multitrack , and a drum machine. I also had one of the first Amp Modellers shortly after, a JD10, which sounded great. These devices work by taking a normal Electric guitar input, and then processing it to sound like its playing through a particular guitar amp, whilst allowing the sound to be input directly via a normal jack plug into a mixer / computer USB interface/ recorder, allowing Recording and/or listening via headphones. No more disturbing the family or neighbours with huge volume. This was all a good grounding in recording, and led to my present setup.

2008...I record all Electric guitars, Vocals and Bass via a Line 6 Toneport...a wonderful box, that gives the best sounding emulations of classic Analog gear I have heard. The Toneport transmits the audio from normal Jackplug input cable, via USB directly into my Computer, where it enters the multitrack program, Reaper. This is a great piece of software that does all (and more) of what the other hugely expensive products do, for a cost of around 25 uk pounds. I control the software faders onscreen using real faders on a Tascam FW1082 Firewire interface, although Reaper works perfectly ok without this , using your PC Mouse instead. I just like the feel of real faders. Drums are programmed using the amazing Jamstix VST Plugin. ..and any "Strings" are played Live by me on an M-Audio MIDI Keyboard, triggering samples usually in Reason Software. Having done a full mix, in real time as I prefer to do, I then run the Master Stereo two tracks through the PSP Vintage Warmer VST Plugin. I find this gives an amazing Live feel to the overall sound, and a real "old tape" vibe. An example of all this in action is the song "Just Have Some Fun" in the Player below

My Acoustic / Electro acoustic guitars are recorded either via a Zoom A2 Acoustic Modeller (or sometimes direct via this DI box), and at the same time the guitar is Mic'ed up using a cheap Behringer SM58 copy dynamic mic. Both these inputs can be fed into my Behringer 1604 analog mixing desk (12 channel, but you only actually need two) , and carefully blended at mixdown to give a balance between Direct sound and Mic'ed sound. A good example of the sound I achieve using the DI/Mic route is "Shoreline", you can play it in this player

I'm particularly pleased with Shoreline, as it was recorded originally on a little Zoom MR4 4 Track digital recorder, bouncing tracks down as I progressed, and finally mixing down to Stereo two track on a Sony MiniDisc. "Bass" is actually me playing single notes on a little Sampler, and drums are a single Loop repeated on the Zoom drum machine, synced to the recorder via MIDI.

My current projects include several collaborations with my good friend and fellow Strawbs fan, Bjorn, aka "Strawbjorn". He sends me a basic guitar/voice track that he's written and recorded, and I add Bass/Guitars/Drums and Procuce/Mix it. For an example of my latest "acoustic" guitar sounds, have a listen to the lovely "Song to Alex"...my Lead Acoustic guitar sound was recorded from the built in Piezo pickup on my Westfield electro acoustic, running through a Yamaha Magicstomp acoustic modeller (the Zoom A2 would sound very similar), and processed using a vst plugin called "Oilcan Echo" by Nomad Factory software. I think it gives a very relaxed Acoustic sound...and a huge thanks for acoustic inspiration to the Master, Brian Willoughby

I'm happy to answer any questions on all of this, and you can check out my songs at Rocles MySpace

and my collaborations with Bjorn are at StrawBjorn's Myspace

I also now have a page of Strawbs Cover Versions on the band's own Website

I can also highly recommend the Zoom 2090 Forums

Another essential is the HomeMadeHitShow , Tony has very kindly played several of my songs on there, and there's GREAT tips and discussion, plus tutorial Videos on all aspects of Home Recording. Coronation Street for real....... :)

My fav TV show, Life on Mars, series 2, Episode 4, featured Strawb's "Lay Down" last night. We reckon that's the biggest TV audience the band have had in modern times (around 6 million)...good stuff. There's a good Forum for the show, lots of lively discussion, including filming locations. Many are very familiar to me, as they are next to the streets where I grew up.....I also had a Mk 3 Cortina once....

The series also partly inspired my song, Where We Are Today

as it reminded me of where I was (and who with...!) in 1972/73...it really is a first class program, definite TV highlight of the week just now.

Rocles enters the world of Blog......

Ok, here we go, my first Blog entry.

My main interest is playing and recording Guitar. I have some of my songs at my Soundclick page , all Home Recorded in my little studio here on the North West Coast of England. its a great hobby, and has allowed me to achieve results that previously would have needed thousands of pounds worth of Pro studio time. I partly use Zoom recording gear, and am a longtime member of the Zoom 2090 Forums , a nice friendly place with loads of helpful advice.

My favourite band is Strawbs....I have been a fan ever since I first saw them Live in Manchester, 1974. I kind of drifted away from them as the band split/changed personnel, and seemingly dissapeared...until the wonders of the Internet, when in 2001 I found Strawbsweb , and nothings ever been quite the same since ;-) I now contribute and assist with the Website with Reviews, Photos and technical help. I'm also pleased to say that all of the band are now personal friends of mine....the nicest people you could wish to meet. My Strawbs pages are here.

I also assist and contribute with David Boardman's marvellous ManchesterHistory pages. I am originally from the Longsight district of Manchester, and have attempted to document part of its history in photographs. Brisca F1 Stock Car racing is another hobby, and many of the photos at David's Belle Vue racing pages were donated by me. I specialise in the production and sale of Brisca F1 Stock Car DVDs , featuring classic racing from the 1970s/80s at Belle Vue and many other tracks.

Ok, all for now...stay tuned for more soon.
